Why Does Evil Exist? A Guest Post from Paramahansa Yogananda

The problem of evil in human lives has always perplexed me. Paramahansa Yogananda writes extensively on, “The Role of Satan in God’s Creation.” I will periodically post more of his East/West teachings here. Quoted from: The Second Coming of Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ Within You, By Paramahansa Yogananda

“An ideal existence is not impossible, but it is for a different time and realm reserved for those who have graduated from the learning assignments of earth life. For the ordinary man in his present stage of evolution, a life without difficulties would be of little value. No lessons of growth would be learned, no transformations of inflexible natures into Godly consciousness, no compelling incentives to seek and know one’s Maker.”

    • Hi Happy Marti, Thanks for your succinct yet thought-provoking comment. I’d like to give this as my answer, from the book Edgar Cayce on Angels, Archangels and the Unseen Forces by Robert J. Grant:

“There is a tendency to believe in the fallen angels or demons only when one hears of hauntings or in cases of exorcism. These manifestations are indeed rare and do not account for a large percentage of evil influences in the earth. Evil manifests in a variety of ways, just as virtue appears in countless forms. The important point is that evil or disharmony is a choice; the fallen are only in that state of existence when the choice is made to twist creative abilities into destructive ones. Where there is manipulation, oppression, war, famine, governmental control of religious belief, there exist the fallen ones.”

Is there an antichrist, one driving force that stands against Love? I’m not sure it’s possible to understand the truly mysterious forces at work on our planet, but it surely seems as though we can all be puppets of a consolidated force that lusts for power.

Maybe you could write about the Buddhist perspective on an evil entity in your upcoming article. 🙂 Pam B

  1. I see evil as a concentration on only ego.

There is a lack of balance between Earth and God, also.

And misdirection of one’s thoughts and emotions.
